Raising over $5000 for Neuroscience Research Australia - Ultramarathon -
                                                  What we  wanted to do

You are invited to participate in this challenging run for Neuroscience Australia

WHAT & WHY

We are raising funds & awareness of all bodily malfunctions that are neurologically based – these include dementia, Parkinson’s, spinal injuries, autism, depression, MS to name but a few. Our run will be supporting Neuroscience Australia.

Bridget Bells mum Wendy Leonard is suffering from neurological disorders, the saddest part being that she often does not remember her beautiful family and she even forgets who she is. We understand that it may be too late to help Bridget’s mum; however, if we can help one other person it will all be worth it.

HOW

Paraburdoo ultra runners Bridget Bell & Barbara Wood are running the full 80km from Tom Price to Paraburdoo, Toni Radcliffe will be completing her first ultra marathon of 50km in support of Bridget and her mum.

First time distance runners Desiree Plested, Vicki Sherwell, Tiffany Tyler are also participating in the teams event lead by Taku Taylor

This is a run that is intended to challenge you both physically and mentally – people who have neurological disorders are challenged every day. We want this run to be something that gives everyone who supports us a great understanding that we are prepared to punish our bodies, punish our minds and push through the hard parts to show we are serious in bringing help to those who absolutely cannot help themselves

TEAMS

Teams are invited to participate on the day either in the actual run or a run of the same distance in your own town. Criteria for teams -

-        Teams are to be made of 4 or LESS runners

-        Each runner must complete a MINIMUM 20km run in one block

-        Should one of your team pull out after you have registered, the rest of the team must make up the remainder of the run themselves – this is a run that challenges you.

-        We realise that running 40km may be too difficult on a team so if you lose 2 runners prior to the event you are able to second a third runner

Individuals

-        the minimum distance is 20km – you can choose to run further if you wish
FUNDRAISING

Fundraising is done via Everyday Heroes – the link is below and the password is = bridgetsmum or you can enter Wendy Leonards Angels on the Everyday Heroes website and be taken to our page. (Men are angels too, not just women)

So come on – register to participate or sponsor one of the runners. We never ever know when the research from the Neuroscience Foundation will be a godsend to one of us

And then what happened?

http://
At the start in Tom Price
6 runners left Tom Price at 6.30 am Saturday 2nd July to begin the journey back to Paraburdoo, 80kms away. Along the way we would be joined by 3 more runners.

Toni Radcliffe had challenged herself to a first time 50km ultra marathon, new distance runners Desiree Plested, Vicki Sherwell, Tiffany Tyler and Anna Hocken, and distance runner/organiser Taku Taylor would cover the 80km with each leg of individual runs being not less than 20km. Mable Gough, Lisa Markich and James Markich would venture 20km out of Tom Price and return home as their contribution and we are very grateful for them being there

Bridget was called back to her family as her mum was now in her last moments. They both were not far from our thoughts.

Fortunately the weather gods were kind to us and though the day was sunny there was a very cool breeze blowing to help keep the temperatures down and make the conditions comfortable for us. Generally the desert heats up to more than 48degrees so we were pretty lucky.

Each km of the run went really well. Toni’s support crew travelled all the way from Carnarvon to be with her on the day. One of the support crew has a caravan park in Carnarvon and they managed to raise over $700 in donations from travelers so that is pretty special.

Desiree, Vicki, Tiffany and Anna were extremely pleased with their individual runs and are keen to give distance running another go. We had lots of support from the traffic and indeed had road trains advising other truck drivers that there were runners on the road and being very supportive by giving us lots of room.

It was fantastic to be met at Bellary by some fabulous Paraburdoo people who just wanted to come out and give us a cheer as we went by. Ultra Marathoner Barbara Wood met up with Toni and Toni’s friend Liz to run alongside her from the 40-50km mark as this was the hardest part for Toni. We were also thrilled to have quite a few people at the entry to Paraburdoo to join us on the last km. We all met up at the Bowls Club afterwards and had a well-deserved pat on the back. We were all definitely sored, tired, hungry but extremely happy with the way the run went.

There were no hiccups along the way at all so all things considered I guess it ended up being a very ordinary day to do an extraordinary thing.

Sadly Bridgets mum passed away 2 days later. Bridget returned to Paraburdoo and on the 17th July, she and best buddy Barbara Wood completed the entire 80kms in less than 10 hours averaging 5.55per km. Phenomenal. Bridget says that she really felt the pain at around 60km and is grateful to have had Barb there to keep her going.

It was an absolutely amazing run and we are grateful and happy to have been able to participate.
